The risks of buying a used CPAP machine

Why do people consider buying a used CPAP machine?

There are a number of reasons you might be tempted to buy a used CPAP machine off somewhere likeTradeMe or even eBay:

  •  You might be trying to save money
  •  You might not want to talk to a doctor about your sleep apnea
  •  You might think it’s easy to setup and use, so why pay for a new one.

The reality is that buying a used machine is fraught with danger and might cost you a lot more than a new machine/

What are the issues with buying a used machine?

1. Safety risks
When you buy a used machine, you risk buying a contaminated machine. CPAP machines are warm and moist, the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. They might not have been cleaned properly (or at all) and you risk getting infections which could include Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Bronchitis and parasites.

2. Older, less sophisticated technology
You are buying a CPAP machine that someone no longer wants. Ask yourself why they are so keen to sell. You might be buying an outdated machine where parts might be discontinued or difficult to get. There’s the possibiliy of dangerous electrical and mechanical faults, and there’s no warranty either.

There will also probably be a lack of new features which a new machine would offer, which are designed to make your CPAP more comfortable and efficient to use.

3. Not set up for you
One solution does not fit all. CPAP machines need to be set up for each patient, there is no shortcut.

In New Zealand, you must have a prescription from a registered sleep physician to buy a CPAP machine. If CPAP therapy is misused, or is used without the proper supervision of a physician, the user may not receive the full clinical benefit and therefore may still suffer moderate to severe sleep apnea (OSA) and the negative health consequences of untreated OSA.
